World Book Day – Year 1

61

1S

We have had a great day getting magical powers from reading and writing.  We all shared our books and discussed the characters.  We watched an excerpt from Matilda and listened to a few songs and then listened to Cressida Cowell as she described the magic of reading and how it can make you use your imagination.  We then did exactly that and wrote our own class story based on lucky dip characters, setting and plot.  We created a story in a jar including a copy of our story.

A story in a jar by 1S
It was a dark and stormy night.  Jasper the elf trotted into town.  Where was everybody?  Just then, he heard arguing coming from every tiny bungalow.  The elves were cross. Wizard Whitebeard flew towards Jasper.  His wise face and mysterious wand were visible in the bright moonlight. “They are all being nasty to each other.” He said.  “It all happened when that angry, horrible giant cast a spell on them.  The only way to break the spell is to travel to the magical cave and find the bubbling potion.  That way they will all be cured.”
Jasper walked for many days and many nights until he finally reached the mystical cave.  It was guarded by a fiery dragon.  Jasper grabbed a heavy stone and threw it towards the scary woods.  The dragon stomped off to see what the noise was.  Jasper snuck into the sparkly cave.  Bats flew high above him.  He spotted the potion, grabbed it and ran back to the village.
He gathered the villagers together and threw the potion into the air where it exploded covering the villagers in kindness.
The End.

1T

Today in 1T we started the day with a quiz giving clues and we had to guess which character the clues were about.  Next, we all chose individually how we wanted our ‘story in a jar’ to evolve and then spent the morning making the setting and character, then sharing as a group.  This afternoon we all shared our books with one another and then explained why we chose the characters we did. Finally, we did book reviews and discussed the characters and our favourite parts within the books.

1W
For World Book Day, 1W created their own ‘Story in a Jar.’ As a class, we talked about the books that we have read and identified the different settings and characters within these stories. We then used these ideas to create our own characters and settings based upon our favourite books. Next, we talked about the pattern that some books may follow and we used this pattern to create our own stories. The children had so much fun making their ‘Story in a Jar!’ We also enjoyed discussing our outfits, books and props together. Finally, we created our own book reviews!
