We the staff have been extremely privileged to share World Book Day with the children at Lord Scudamore Academy. From Nursery all the way to Year 6 there has been delightful pleasure and immense enthusiasm to share with all, our children’s, love of reading and books that thrill them and take them on exciting journeys with each turn of a page.
Using poetry this year everyone has shared their story telling skills indulging our classrooms and corridors with the thrill of laughter and happiness gained through the love and pleasure of reading.
Year 3
Year 3 created t-shirt designs based on the poem ‘Where the Taffy Birds Grow’ by Margaret McBride Hoss. Then we recited our poem wearing them. We shared our favourite books with each other and listened to authors tell us about how they are inspired to write. Together we completed our World Book Day quiz for KS2.
Year 4
In Year 4, the children learnt the Quangle Wangle’s Hat by Edward Lear.
They enjoyed learning the poem and adding actions to the words. They also designed t-shirts linked to the poem. We had a lot of fun thinking of the different pictures we could create in order to bring the poem to life.Â
Year 5
Year 6
For World Book Day in Year 6, we looked at the poem ‘An Emerald as Green as Grass’ by Christina Rossetti and used the structure to create our own poems, instead using the months of the year and what they meant to us. First of all, the children worked in small groups to decide which colours and images represented each month. Then, they chose a month individually to create a piece of art work using all of the techniques which we have practised so far in Year 6. After this, we wrote a whole-class poem about the months of the year (referring back to the original whilst incorporating all of the children’s ideas from the morning activities) then added the line for the month which we drew about to our art work.
